Club News. Mo Hesketh It is with deep regret that we heard of Mo Hesketh's sudden death on Saturday 17th November, 2007. Mo had been poorly for only a short time and was undergoing treatment at Christie Hospital. Whilst in hospital, Mo was supported by her daughters Lynn & Karen and their families, our thoughts and deepest sympathy are extended to them at this time. Many of us have lost a true friend in Mo who was well loved. Together with her late husband Jack she had been a member of NCCC for many years, both being active members, Jack being Commodore in 1989-90 and Mo his Lady. They were both on the General Committee for quite a number of years and Jack also served as Bar Chairman for some time. Mo continued in this role after Jack's death in 2003 until the formation of the limited company. We’re sure many have good memories of Mo, at the Clubhouse, Whiteley Green and further afield. Holidays shared, plenty of laughter, a few drams taken and good times enjoyed by all who knew her. Mo missed Jack terribly, but they are now back together, cruising Heaven's Waterways God Bless Mo, we'll miss you. Bob and Sheila Barlow.
Sue Wright.
A brave and courageous woman, a true and staunch friend, Sue passed away at home in the early hours of Thursday, 30th August 2007. She was diagnosed with cancer almost four years ago just after returning from visiting her children in Australia. Sue had battled long and hard right to the end with various spells in Stepping Hill hospital and in the out patients' chemo therapy unit at Christie's. She always remained optimistic and cheerful so much so that not long after her diagnosis she went with a group of friends on an unofficial club cruise in Ireland. Sue was the Club's Commodore for 2 years, 2000/02 and also the Commodore's lady for husband Pete in 1996/07. She will be remembered for her excellent organisational skills, her great sense of humour coupled with her straight to the point approach and her no nonsense attitude but above all her warm hospitality always ensuring that everyone had plenty on their plates. She has supported the club for many years not only doing a stint as Ditchcrawler Editor but serving on the general and social committees where she gave help and offered good advice at all times participating in the many and varied functions of the club. Ruth and I have lost a much valued friend as have many other club members. Our thoughts go out to her immediate family who were always uppermost in her mind, her daughter Christine and son-in-law Charlie, her son Philip but especially her husband Pete who has been at her side throughout the period of her illness. You are now free of pain Sue - rest in
peace. You will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved you.
Your Club Premises Again owing to an excellent response from the “volunteers”, on Monday 12th March, we had managed to completely remove all traces of the old carpet and rubber backing from the premises. The rest of the new partition wall had been plastered ready for emulsoning, the skirting had been mahogany stained ready for varnishing, and the new section of banister on the top landing had also been given two coats of mahogany stain. On Tuesday morning Robert Moore arrived to give the front doors their second coat, but owing to a slight hitch it wasn’t possible, that didn’t stop him though, he proceeded to rub down the front entrance handrail and supports for the entrance canopy. As the carpet removal had been completed on Monday I decided to replace the tiles to the ceiling in front of the bar as this had always been an eyesore and looked untidy. This took me all Tuesday as I had to cut each tile separately from sheets of plasterboard as some of the openings weren’t quite square. Taking the old tiles down was messy as some of the debris from the roof, which had been replaced recently, had collected on top of them. As this work came to completion at about 4 p.m. Brian Bowker arrived and agreed to emulsion the tiles to blend in with the rest of the ceiling. This he and Hazel proceeded to do as I left to go home for a rest, I returned later to varnish the skirting board to the new wall and hand rails to the upper landing banister. On Wednesday I had to go to Stockport to pay for the new chairs which were to be delivered on The Friday morning, and buy some curtain rails for the foyer entrance and half landing window. I fixed these in position ready for the new curtains which were scheduled to arrive on Thursday afternoon. Now everything was ready for fitting of the new carpet which is to be laid on Thursday (this will have been done by the time you read this letter) and hopefully the curtains will have been put up by the following Saturday night. The “Fitting Out Supper” will be held in a function room which has completely been transformed in less than a month by Volunteer members. I would like to say that without the people who continually volunteer to give their time to the club for the benefit of all the membership this club could not survive.
Not forgetting:- Alan Fosbrook and David & Glenys Critchlow, who also offered their help. I would also like to thank Jim Lamen for his advice and for asking W.O.R.G. to donate all the new aluminium edging strips for the carpets and door jams. Thanks Jim and W.O.R.G. Bob Barlow Premises Manager
I would like to thank all those members who gave up their time and make an effort to help decoration the Club house in preparation for the fitting of the new carpet and curtains in the function room, entrance hall, stairs and landing. The work started on the Sunday morning with Bryan Roberts and Eric Roberts taking down all the pictures and plaques from the walls of the club room ready for an early start on Monday. Owing to an excellent response to my plea for volunteers, on the Monday by late afternoon we had managed to complete the preparation and emulsioning of the walls, and repainting of the radiators in the main function room and after a short tea break the landing and stairways were prepared and a good amount of the walls emulsioned. Tuesday morning even more new volunteers arrived for work and we proceeded to complete the landing and entrance foyer by mid afternoon. including the glossing of all the doors. On Wednesday, the function room double door had a third coat of varnish then it was tidy up time. All the pictures were replaced; notice boards remounted; curtains re-hung and the place made ship shape ready for Thursday club night. As we had made such good progress it was decided to brighten up the bar area with the same Magnolia Emulsion to match the Club room. I would personally like to thank the following club members for all their help and hard work. They are in alphabetical order:
And of course Sheila Barlow for organising the work and making sure everyone that came had a job to do. Bob Barlow Premises Manager P.S.
